Keeping it Kosher in Real Estate
So, after 26 years in real estate, I still get hit with something new. Here’s what happened.
We have a home listed for sale on 70th Street and I thought it would be a good idea to have a Broker Open. That’s where you put out wine and food and invite all the local agents to come by for a look, a snack, and hopefully not too much wine. But what can you do?
I got Old Republic Title onboard to sponsor the goodies, layed out the marketing plan and called the seller. Our client, you know, the one we put first.
Well, he said, “You know our kitchen is kosher, so anything you serve must be kosher.”
(Say what?) I told him of course and hung up. And the adventure begins.
We, my granddaughter Katelynn who takes care of all things other agents, and I began by asking around. We asked the title company, our lender who puts on events, our agents (I went to Melissa Shapiro’s Bat Mitzvah for her daughter) had they ever done a kosher event? No one had ever even imagined what that would entail.
We Googled. We asked Siri. We became quickly confused. It all has to do with keeping meat and dairy separate, and how the utensils are kept and cleaned.
I called our seller back. “Oh, and we are also vegetarian.” Of course, well so much for the meat and dairy thing.
Then someone said, “Aren’t there kosher restaurants?” Back to Siri. “Hey Siri, kosher restaurants nearby.”
Up popped up Kitchen 18 on Scottsdale Road. Our new office is on Shea at Scottsdale Road. So, I pulled up the map and sure enough, due south of our office across the parking lot, is Kitchen 18.
I go there and explain my situation and the nice gentleman shows me the menu, including the catering menu. I ordered bowl of Matzo Ball soup (delicious) and asked if I could take a menu. He said “Of course.”
I gave it to Kay with Old Republic and the rest is history.
We had a wonderful Broker Open. The fact that the food was kosher made for excellent conversation and they liked the house too.
Fingers crossed on getting an offer soon and I can now say Those Callaways is kosher. Well, part of the time anyway.
Kitchen 18 is open Sunday through Thursday from 11am to 9pm and Friday from 11am to 3pm. Closed on Saturday. Their address is 10211 N Scottsdale Rd, Scottsdale AZ 85253. Just go south from our office. Dairy Queen is halfway. Plenty of parking. Enjoy.
