Go To Bear Flat This Weekend

July 2, 2025

If you’re looking for a story to tell on Monday, go to Bear Flat on Saturday.

Bear Flat is not far, only 18 miles past Payson, but it is remote and pristine, and the 100 or so residents like it that way. The highway to Payson is four lane, divided and excellent. The last 6 miles to Bear Flat are an adventure. Take State Route 260 east out of Payson. The Bear Flat turnoff is 13 miles. Once you leave 260, you will follow Forest Service Trail 405A. It is hard packed from 80 years of travel and well maintained. It’s the kind of road that you edge to the right for oncoming cars. Be sure to smile and wave.

You’ll see cattle and deer and elk and campers along the way. The last mile or so climbs halfway to heaven as it rounds two mountains. The view is spectacular. Then you cross Tonto Creek (gate code: 2327) and enter the community of Bear Flat. Follow the long meadow on the right to the Retreat on Tonto Creek on the left. Don’t worry about getting lost; we will put out lots of signs.

I’ll be there Saturday from 10 to 4 holding an Open House. We will have refreshments. Create that novel in the sky office next to the primary bedroom. Follow the hidden door to your future music studio. Paint while sitting on the view deck. We invite you to explore the grounds, climb down to the creek, and contemplate the return trip. And on Monday, you can tell the world you’ve been to Bear Flat.

While there, you might drive the community, hike a trail, or go fishing in Tonto Creek. The U.S Forest Service operates a fishery upstream, and it is stocked with trout. Whatever you choose, this weekend could be an adventure like few have experienced.  And if you want to come for the Fourth, Payson puts on quite a celebration with watermelon eating contests, live music, and fireworks in the park.

I’ll see you there and maybe, just maybe, you’ll find your dream home in the mountains. I’ll have a property list, and I can hook you up.
