The Queen Lives
The Queen of Hearts is a simple fundraising game. Fifty-four cards, a deck plus two Jokers, are put into fifty-four envelopes. They are shuffled and numbered one through fifty-four. Then, they are taped or tacked to a large display board and the game is on!
Once a week or however often the promoters decide, raffle tickets are sold, with the winner having the opportunity to pick an envelope. If they pick the Queen of Hearts, they win the pot, minus a cut for the house.
Each week that the Queen lives, the pot grows. Now, if both Jokers are picked, then the game starts over with 54 new envelopes with the pot getting larger. This can only reset one time.
Well, something unusual has occurred at the Scottsdale Elks club at 6398 E Oak St, Scottsdale, AZ 85257. You see, the pot has grown to $400,000 plus and the board has only two envelopes left – 39 and 50. OMG! It is pandemonium and such fun.
The next meeting is tomorrow the 24th, and is limited to members only. They expect to sell 40,000 of more tickets at a dollar apiece. So, if you want a chance to win, call up your favorite Elk member and ask them to buy you a chance for riches.
Of course, the odds are based on how many tickets you buy, but the payoff is ten times the night’s ticket sales.
The Elks get 40% off the top and the winner gets 60%. But there is a hitch this week. If your ticket is drawn, you can pick a card or you can choose to take half the pot.
What would you do? Pick 39 or 50? Take half? Like I said, it is high drama and so much fun.
My daughter Kelly is going early to wait in line for a table. She will be packing more than a few people’s ticket orders, including mine. Wish us luck! I will report back to you next week. Maybe we can have a video.
By the way, Kelly is fully committed, so you’ll have to find your own Elk member. There are plenty of them around, their hearts are full, and they do such good work while having fun along the way.
